Two-piece evening dress of various patterned mesh fabrics over lamé and silk, trimmed with beads and sequins and metal thread embroidery. Designed by Janet Patterson.

The designer used a sombre palette for the costumes in this film, faithful to the darkness evoked in the novel. However, the combination of gold with black serves to "lift" the dress on the screen, while remaining part of the subdued mood.

The designer, Janet Patterson, became interested in the use of embroidery on film costumes when working on a previous production, Oscar and Lucinda, and welcomed an opportunity to work in cooperation with Cosprop on her designs for this film.
